Five Open Geometric Structures
1979
Famous American artist Sol LeWitt designed these geometric structures. He has been doing three-dimensional work since the 1960s, using simple geometric units such as cubes and squares that are organised in pre-determined mathematical sequences. He wrote, 'To work with a plan that is pre-set is one way of avoiding subjectivity. It also obviates the necessity for designing each work in turn. The plan would design the work'. Assistants made the structures according to LeWitt's orders. LeWitt emphasises the impersonality of these structures by minimising his physical appearance in the fabrication process. Two Open Modular Cubes/Half-Off
1972
'The most interesting characteristic of the cube is that it is relatively uninteresting,' the famous artist Sol LeWitt wrote in 1982. It's best used as a starting point for more complex functions, as a grammatical device on which the rest of the work can be built.' This sculpture is part of a series that starts with a single cube and uses it as a building block or module in a variety of ways. Click here to access the source of the model.
